Is the SGR dead?

This is the question in most of our minds following the directive by the Kenya Ports Authority that it was no longer mandatory to haul your cargo by SGR but have a choice to use road transport.
In a statement issued by the corporation, this follows a directive by the newly elected President Ruto that all Port services be reverted back to the port of Mombasa.

The statement quashing the 2018 directive reads in part,

“This is, therefore, to notify all shipping lines that importers’ documentation of place of clearance and mode of transport for their goods shall be at their choice,”

Shippers are happy with the directive stating that rail, road, port, CFSs and ICDs will compete on level ground. We expect the cost to respond to market dynamics as it is a win-win for all.”

Where does this place the SGR? Give us your take...
